According to the latest Best Practices in Health Care Employer Survey by Willis Towers Watson, 93% of employers see lowering the cost of healthcare is a high priority over the next 3 years. 63% of employers view healthcare affordability as a difficult challenge. Healthcare costs are expected by employers to increse by 4.9% in 2020. 89% of employers see that the rise in healthcare costs contribute to financial stress for employees (Rodriguez, 2019).
The survey by Willis Towers Watson revealed 3 areas of cost-saving that employers may consider. Prescription drug costs may be lowered by offering biosimilars. Incentives may be provided to employees who utilize lower-cost services. Third, and of particular interest to me, is that employers offer a more holistic approach to the mental health of their clients. More employers are expected to measure the stress level of their employers. 27% of employers currently offer phone-based applications that support sleep and relaxation (Rodriguez, 2019).
